North Korea Fires Multiple Short-Range Missiles Into Sea Off Its East Coast, South Says 

The international community expressed concern immediately following a fresh round of military provocations from Northeast Asia, where North Korea this morning fired a barrage of short-range missiles from its east coast. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said that North Korea fired missiles into the Sea of Japan on Jan. 13, 2025, marking another act of hostility by the secretive regime. 

What explains North Korea's missile launch? 

The missile launch coincides with a week of heightened tensions in the region as North Korea continues to develop and test its weapons. Although the nature of the fired short-range missiles remains unconfirmed, North Korea's ongoing efforts to refine its military capabilities, from weapon accuracy to strike range, would not be unexpected. Pyongyang often condemns the long-standing army drills in South Korea, which involve the United States, as invasion rehearsals and views the launch as a rebuke to these drills. 

This launch follows a series of other provocations by North Korea, which tested several missile systems in recent months, including short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) and other advanced technologies.
