Manchester United vs AFC Bournemouth: Premier League Preview, Team News, Stats & Head-to-Head

Premier League Preview, Team News, Stats & Head-to-Head: Manchester United vs AFC Bournemouth.

Follow all the action right here as Man United face AFC Bournemouth at Old Trafford with the season in full swing. One of England’s most decorated football clubs, Manchester United have had a mixed start to the 2024/25 campaign. Their form has been patchy, they will want to respond with a statement if they can against the Cherries. The Cherries are chasing their own targets this season and their form has picked up at the hands of Andoni Iraola, but they will be hoping to avoid the drop after surviving relegation battles in recent years with impressive displays in challenging fixtures.

This clash presents an interesting battle of United’s talent-laden team against Bournemouth’s plucky underdogs. Manchester United will be looking to get the home advantage, and Bournemouth will be wishing for an upset, especially after proving they're able to go toe to toe with the best sides in recent years.

Team News:

Manchester United:

That comes with Erik ten Hag hoping to shrug off some injury issues going into the game. It is expected some key players like Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford will start, with both of the players essential in attack. However, Bournemouth should fear the experienced defensive pair of the Dutch manager which is the Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez duo.

But United have their own injury issues to deal with. Christian Eriksen and Mason Mount may also be ruled out by fitness concerns, potentially leaving United short of craft in the engine room. Antony, who has been suspended, is also not available. Even with those setbacks, Ten Hag has a deep squad, and Jadon Sancho and Casemiro are expected to rise to the occasion.

Bournemouth:

Under Andoni Iraola, AFC Bournemouth will also be dealing with a number of injuries, but should name a strong enough side to make a game of it at Old Trafford. Cherries marksman Dominic Solanke will be the chief threat, with the forward expected to be an important cog for those looking to create and finish chances. They will lean on the dominance of defenders like Marcos Senesi to contain Manchester United, too.

Bournemouth will need to be at their defensive best, they have found it hard so far against high-press sides. Ilya Zabarny and Philip Billing need to be at their best, their physicality in the middle of the park can disrupt United’s build-up play. The fitness of key midfielders Lewis Cook and Alex Scott could be crucial to the balance and energy of the team in the match.

Head-to-Head:

Manchester United have a strong record against AFC Bournemouth and have faced them in the Premier League on numerous occasions. In their 11 Premier League matches against each other, United have won 9 to Bournemouth's 2. The last meeting came in March 2024 when Manchester United cruised to a 2-0 success at Old Trafford.

Bournemouth last defeated Manchester United in the league during the 2019/20 season, winning 1-0 at the Vitality Stadium. The Cherries would want to reproduce that kind of form, but can do so in front of a crowd where historically United have proved to be formidable.

Stats:

Manchester United have won 9 of the last 11 Premier League matches the two clubs have played against one another.

4 Goals scored by Bournemouth in their last 6 visits to Old Trafford

United have had an inconsistent start to the season, winning 4, losing 3 of the first 7 games.

Bournemouth have been relatively solid, but they are better in the last few games form-wise, the last 6 matches they have gained 2 W,2 D,2 L.

Prediction:

Manchester United are firm favorites, but Bournemouth’s ability to fight off attacks and the tight defensive line they employ may make for a tough match. But with United having struggled for consistency this season, expect a close-run thing again. Still, with United’s attacking quality in abundance — Rashford and Fernandes — should win the day and bag all three points, but Bournemouth may make life hard for them.

Prediction: Manchester United 2-1 AFC Bournemouth
